Having been in the information marketing business for over 25 years, I know that YOU need a tool to see how well you’re doing. We all do. Growing up hoping to play golf for a living, the measuring stick was pretty simple: YOUR SCORE that day on the course.

Selling info products, the criteria are more numerous. They would include, but not be limited to the following items which I’ve separated into the OBJECTIVE and the SUBJECTIVE.

With a sign up in my garage that says: “Measurement Eliminates Argument” it’s clear that I prefer to measure myself and others based on objective criteria. FOR THE MOST PART!

When it comes down to it, YOU are the ultimate judge of whether or not your successful in this business.

My Dad was an American Diplomat. I grew up in the Philippines. After he had formally retired from the State Department and was writing full time, we used to have some great chats. One of the things I ALWAYS remember him saying was that he was a FAILURE in his chosen profession.

In HIS view, since he never became an Ambassador, he had failed. For those of you who don’t know the Foreign Service “business”, that’s the highest rank you can achieve. About 50% of those folks are appointed and the other half are CAREER DIPLOMATS like my Dad was.

Too hard on himself? Perhaps. But, only YOU can determine whether or not you’re successful in the information marketing business. The prologue now completed, here is the MEAT of the matter.

Objective Measures:

How Much Money Have You Made This Month/Year?

Pretty straightforward one here. All you have to do is look at your business bank account to give you the answer.

How Many People Visited Your Site this Month/Year?

If you have Google Analytics installed (and you SHOULD) then this question should be a simple one to answer.

What is Your Google PR Rank?

If you haven’t already, go to Firefox and download the plug-in, SEOQauke for the browser. This will give you important data for each site you visit, including of course, your own.

How Often Do You Get Requests to Write or Speak?

You should keep track of this one, regardless of whether or not you AGREE to speak or write when asked.

How Often Are You Coaching/Consulting in Your Field?

You have the numbers related to revenue from this endeavor that you should track, but ALSO keep track of how often you are asked.

How Many People Are On Your List?

Pretty straightforward and even EASIER to tabulate if you have WebMarketingMagic.com (blatant plug!)

Subjective Measures:

– What Are Others Saying About You?

Google your own name on a regular basis. See what others are saying about you. This will give you a feel for what others think about you.

– How Much FUN Are You Having?

The ultimate measure for me in my business is the answer to THIS question. If I’m NOT having fun or I’m having LESS fun than last month/year, then I need to change things PRONTO.

This is certainly NOT an exhaustive list and I’m sure I’ll come up with a few more to add to each category. BUT, this will get your started, AND more importantly, what is on YOUR list that I have left out? Please help me add to this post with comments and suggestions!
