The best way to improve your speaking skills is to get out and speak before as many groups as possible in order to practice. You can watch yourself in a mirror to get started, but nothing compares to the butterflies-in-the-stomach experience of speaking for a group and watching and hearing the reactions to your presentation.
This takes courage. For some information marketers who excel at creating products and writing and posting content to promote their products, standing up before a crowd of live human beings is absolutely terrifying. Other people thrive on it. Basically, it doesn’t matter how you feel about it, one way or the other. Just do it.
The whole point of your speaking engagements is to ENGAGE with your audience. So, if you are using visual aids such as a PowerPoint presentation or even old-fashioned marker boards or paper tablets on an easel (best to move away from anything that is not digital) then you know that every second your own attention is on those visual aids is a second you are not engaging with your audience. And it is gone forever.
If you cannot stay continuously engaged with your audience so they are picking up on your passion and emotions on your information marketing topic, then don’t try to use visual aids at all. You have to be the main focus of attention, and you have to be so engaging that your audience likes it. So, one way to do that is to avoid the distractions associated with visual aids whenever possible.
