Who Is Using Which Social Media?

Docstoc is a great source of information and advice that I often recommend to my clients who are just starting out in business. Today I saw a very interesting infographic on that site depicting demographics of social media users, showing who is using which social media platform. Here are some of the statistics provided:

” The Pew Research Center has released the results of a comprehensive social media survey, conducted over several years to evaluate which demographics were using social media, and on which platforms. Which social networking sites emerged on top?

Of the online adults surveyed at the end of 2012:

67% use Facebook

20% use LinkedIn

16% use Twitter

15% use Pinterest

13% use Instagram

6% use Tumblr”

I staunchly contend that social media is effective only if you are using the right platform in the right way for your particular target market.  These Pew statistics are valuable, and may help drive your decisions about where to post links to your information products. If you’re serious about it, here’s some more information from the Pew survey:

“It appears that women use social media 9% more than men do, at a whopping rate of 71%. Other frontrunners with the highest social network activity in their demographic include city dwellers (70%), Hispanics (72%) and adults with a household income below $30,000 annually (72%).”

Interesting, isn’t it?  Naturally, young people use social media the most. This survey reports that 83% of people in the 18 – 29 years age bracket use social media regularly, while only 32% of adults over the age of 65 use it. Interesting and useful information.
